Day 14 - August 2

Stayed in a nondescript motel in Superior, Wisconsin and dried everything out overnight. Ready to begin another day but the weather isn't cooperating. Forecast was for rain yesterday and clear today. So far we have had about a half inch of partly cloudy this morning. Rain gear is nicely tucked away so I hope to wait out the Storm.

I see a break and make my way out of Superior, WI. A little wet but soon drying out again. Must say, I'm happy to be out of Duluth/Superior. Industry and shipping are important to the people of this area, but for biking I really prefer waves crashing on the beach to the sound of back-up alarms In shipyards.  Buh-Bye

So, here's a little knowledge from biking experience that will put you in the know: cows listen and horses don't.   Say good morning to a horse in a meadow and they pretend to be deaf. But a "hi cow" under the same circumstances makes the whole herd lift their heads and take notice. I'm in Wisconsin so there are cows around , naturally. I stopped at a dairy farm fence today to talk with the cows and every "Norman" (reference; City Slickers) came up to greet me. Cows got it all over horses.

At lunch I meet a pair  bicycling from Portland, Oregon to Portland, Maine.  I don't get their names because they are I a hurry to meet a September deadline in Maine.  Two hours later I'm about a mile from a campground in Cornucopia, WI where I have a reservation for the night. I came upon two bikers at the side of the road looking all confused. They are staying at the same campground as me but their GPS is pointing them in the wrong direction.  We ride East for another 2 miles and find our mutual destination. Like deja Vu these two are on the way from Portland to Portland. What are the chances?  Odd thing is, they follow me into the campground and dissapear when I pull into my site. Later that evening I tour the camp looking for the bikers but they are not to be found.  I never saw them leave so I've decided that they don't really exist but are my imaginary friends conjured up as a result of being without company for two days straight.

As I'm settling in for the evening a neighbor from across the road makes an introduction and asks if I would like to share their campfire. Seriously timely!  They are four couples from Kanaas City on a bucket list trip kayaking the Apostle Islands off shore near Cornucopia.  They are great fun and before long I'm awake way past bedtime having yuks with my new friends.

Today's ride was 61 miles for a total of 780 miles through day 14.

I am a casual bike rider.  Five or ten miles is a typical ride and on occasion, my wife and I have completed 30-mile trails for a day of fun.  Biking Superior is going to be a much harder endurance test than a few casual days.  Being well aware of this fact, I have been conditioning for the event. Now in a near vegetative state, the Midwest winter has taken its toll as usual, adding a few pounds here and there.   Following doctor’s orders, I have been doing my level best to speed recovery from a partial knee replacement a few months ago.   The routine established following professional PT consists of three to five miles walking daily and weight training 2 or 3 times each week.   For a Superior ride, I will need to step up my game – especially legs and core. In mid-winter I was taking advantage of every thaw to get a few miles in before the next snow storm.   The threat of snow is gone, but the temperature is not yet inspiring.   Noneth...
