Day 23 - August 11

Left from Baraga State Park with the sun just breaking the horizon of Superior. The village of L'anse is just three miles away and my plan was to have coffee and breakfast at the Subway and also get a sub for lunch. This stretch of road doesn't have any services for about 40 miles - not a gas station, convenience store, restaurant or Indian casino. There is one small market about 8 miles before my intended destination and then again nothing for 10 miles after. It is really remote here so I have to figure out how to eat for the next 24 hours.

So, back to the plan. Subway breakfast and lunch and find something in the market for dinner. Last resort is the could store with hot dogs and ice cream.  Wouldn't you know, Subway opens late on Saturday in L'anse.  I don't feel like killing an hour doing nothing so I have a protein bar and move on.  So, 35+ miles later I pull into the market and load up with coffee, salami, cheese, Pringles and some assorted fruit.  Dinner is a hot dog and an ice cream cone.

Today's route, as well as being remote is also a slow climb to an elevation of 2,200 feet. It's a fairly hard ride (not Canada hard) and I work on solving the Fruit Loops mystery as a distraction from the grind.  Just outside of L'anse some Fruit Loops appear alongside the road, mostly on the shoulder where I ride.  A short while later - more Fruit Loops. I imagine someone in a car snacking on cereal and randomly tossing it out the window because it doesn't taste good. A short time later the random piles of Fruit Loops turns into a steady stream of cereal.  This goes on for 12 MILES!  Now my guess turns to a cereal truck with a leaking carton that is steadily rolling out the back. In any case, the U.P. now has more Fruit Loops than Washingtob DC.  I suspect that the suirrels are happy too - in both places.

Today's ride was 45 miles for a total of 1,208.

I am a casual bike rider.  Five or ten miles is a typical ride and on occasion, my wife and I have completed 30-mile trails for a day of fun.  Biking Superior is going to be a much harder endurance test than a few casual days.  Being well aware of this fact, I have been conditioning for the event. Now in a near vegetative state, the Midwest winter has taken its toll as usual, adding a few pounds here and there.   Following doctor’s orders, I have been doing my level best to speed recovery from a partial knee replacement a few months ago.   The routine established following professional PT consists of three to five miles walking daily and weight training 2 or 3 times each week.   For a Superior ride, I will need to step up my game – especially legs and core. In mid-winter I was taking advantage of every thaw to get a few miles in before the next snow storm.   The threat of snow is gone, but the temperature is not yet inspiring.   Noneth...
